Iris Study

I like using vine charcoal! After drawing a rough impression it can be wiped off,leaving a ghost image to refine. I used that process about four times, then the last time used a darker, more permanent compressed charcoal. It gets to a place where drawing feels almost like sculpting. That's a fun place to be!

Carnation mapping

When I'm doing nature studies, I'll sometimes map the object by fitting some part of it into a square and dividing that into 3rds or 4ths. the results usually surprise me. This one reminds me of the tall stove pipe hat illusion where the brim is much wider than it appears.

Discovery drawings

I'd like to understand the whole well enough to avoid getting details out of proportion like in the bottom drawing. The middle drawing is less to look at but is starting to capture the form.

Edges

I Like Spring for lots of reasons. The arrival of these flowers is one.

the sketch I plan to use for a ballerina painting. These dolls are about 5" high, as I've been drawing them I been amazed by how finely sculpted their little faces are.

Spare Moment Portrait

Libraries are a nice place to observe and sketch people, Naomi and I spent an hour there today. I've been much impressed by the hero of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Novel that I'm reading for the first time. Is that Uncle Tom?
